CANKER SORES

Canker sores are small, painful lesions that can appear on the tongue, gums, or inside of the cheeks. They are most often not serious and heal spontaneously. In some cases, they may be linked to general conditions such as vitamin deficiencies.

What are mouth ulcers?

They are small superficial ulcers that are most often found in the mouth. Isolated or grouped, mouth ulcers form a rounded lesion, covered in the center with a white-yellowish coating and bordered with red. They cause more or less painful discomfort when chewing. Eating then becomes difficult.

Mouth ulcers are painful ulcers that generally heal spontaneously within 10 days

What is their origin?

They correspond to the localized destruction of a small area of tissue inside the mouth. They occur in isolation in a healthy individual. Canker sores can be linked to certain factors that promote their appearance:

  • When there are deficiencies, for example in vitamin B12
  • For psychological reasons (stress)
  • By eating foods rich in histamine (nuts, chocolate, Gruyère cheese, etc.)
  • When there is local trauma (irritation from a prosthesis or dental appliance)
  • Due to viral infections, flu-like conditions, etc.

Our advice

Canker sores heal spontaneously, most often in ten days.

However, they tend to recur.

Rigorous dental hygiene with careful brushing 3 times a day for 3 minutes is essential, as well as mouthwashes.

If you are sensitive to foods rich in histamine, which cause canker sores, avoid eating them.

Products to be applied locally can protect the lesions and thus limit painful contact.
